Book Review – A Very Sweet Picture Book & a Halloween Limerick

Madeline Finn and the Therapy Dog by Lisa Papp

From the publisher: Peachtree

Madeline Finn hopes Star can become a therapy dog. But first he needs to pass his test. They have been practicing all the skills he needs to master. They practice meeting people. They practice sitting still when a bike goes by. They even practice meeting other dogs. Now Madeline Finn and Star are off to Walker Oaks, a retirement community where Star will take his tests. They face a variety of challenges and meet several new friends. But Madeline Finn can't stop thinking about an elderly man in a wheelchair, who never smiles. Is there something she and Star can do to help Mr. Humphrey?

This is a lovely picture book. It’s like a giant hug – it’s soft and warm and wraps you up in its embrace. The palette is pleasing with such enjoyable illustrations. I love learning about a new series and now I can read the other two books, Madeline Finn and the Library Dog and Madeline Finn and the Shelter Dog. There are so many sweet elements to this story, a dog in training, visiting a retirement home, understanding there are people with different issues and pain to work through and how animals and people can assist them, reading and listening. Madeline Finn and the Therapy Dog is a joy to read.

And a Halloween Limerick!

There once was a ghost who was blue

He found it too hard to say Boo!

It wasn’t until

A mean ghost named Jill

She scared him so much he Boo-hooed!

March Limerick Time!

March just seems like the perfect time for a limerick. Probably because of St.Patrick's Day, even though that was a couple of weeks ago. I know. What's fun about these poems is that they can be on any topic. As you'll see below, mine is about a cat with a Hollywood dream. No, I don't know where that came from and why. 😄 Just happens. You can do them on sports, animals, places, vegetables, cookies, fro-yo. Anything. The first, second and fifth lines must have 7-10 syllables and have the same verbal rhyme. The third and fourth have 5-7 syllables and have the same rhythm and rhyme together. No problem! What makes it even more fun, is to write one with another person or group. Hysterical! There's even a poem generator for limericks.
Coming up on the blog are a bunch of book reviews/blurbs as soon as I type them up.
Enjoy and start writing. 😎😻🎬

A Texas cat came to L.A.
And had to decide if she'd stay.
After makeup and hair
She debuted on the air.
A truckload of fish was her pay.

Limerick Time!

Even though St. Patrick's day has come and gone, it's still March, so we can get our Irish on and do a fun exercise with limericks! They look easy, don't they? Maybe easier than other forms of poetry, but still require work. You can feel it when it's not working and you think and think and try different words and phrases. Which is what I had to do multiple times with the first one, Pink Love. The second one came about faster. Like all things, the more you do it, the better and hopefully easier it gets?! One can try, at least. And I feel they need more work!  Maybe I can work on funnier ones next time.

Here's the pattern I used. I'll show it in words and symbols. Both work for me.
Lines 1, 2 & 5 are the same rhythm and rhyme (can be 7-10 syllables)
Lines 3 & 4 are the same (can be 5-7 syllables).

Da DUM da da DUM da da DUM for lines 1, 2, 5

Da DUM da da DUM for lines 3-4

Or I like to see it this way:

I / II / II /
I / II / II /

I / II /
I / II /

I / II / II /

Pink Love

A poet and singer named Pink

Her songs help you feel and to think

Include everyone

Born under the sun

Love all and be kind, that’s the link

Hope Knows

A pretty, young lady named Hope

Her boyfriend and she did elope

The parents were pissed

The family dissed

The couple held firm and said nope
